A Winter Journey to the Pyeongchang Trout Festival, Following the Glittering River and the Thrill of the Catch

Introduction

When I think of Odaecheon with winter light settled over it, I first recall the cold air seeping through the ice and the gentle sound of flowing water. Laughter gathers around the small holes drilled in the clear ice above the river, and the movement of trout felt at your fingertips deepens the excitement of a winter trip even more.

Overview

*The food information below is based on the previous year’s (2025) festival and is currently being updated for the 2026 festival.*

The Pyeongchang Trout Festival is a celebration reborn from the memories of our ancestors enduring long, harsh winters, retold as a winter story of snow, ice, and trout. Every winter, when the thick ice forms over Odaecheon, visitors can gaze at the fish swimming in the clear river below and enjoy trout fishing on the ice, experiencing the thrilling bite along with a variety of winter activities all in one place.

Held around 3562 Gyeonggang-ro, Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, this festival is a cultural tourism event encompassing not only ice fishing but also winter leisure sports, hands-on experiences, food, and performances. Even in the cold river wind, the grounds are filled with warmth and laughter, offering time to create lasting memories of your winter trip.

Program Information

Ice Fishing

This is the festival’s signature program, where you drill a hole through the thick ice on Odaecheon and fish for trout. As you drop your line while watching the trout swimming beneath the clear ice, you can feel both the chill of the winter river and the electrifying tug at your fingertips.

Tent Fishing & Indoor Fishing Area

For those who find the outdoor cold a bit too much, tent fishing and an indoor fishing area are also available. You can enjoy fishing in a sheltered, warm space, making it especially popular with families with children and older visitors.

Bare-Handed Trout Catching

This hands-on program invites you to step into water about 50 cm deep and catch trout with your bare hands. The cold of the winter water will shock your body at first, but the moment you hold a live trout in your arms, a special sense of accomplishment and laughter comes naturally.

Children’s Fishing Area

A separate children’s fishing area is operated so kids can enjoy fishing safely. With shallow water and relatively easy conditions, it’s a great place for their first fishing experience.

Winter Leisure Experiences

Various winter play facilities such as sledding, snow rafting, ice bikes, argo rides, and skating are prepared. The speed of gliding over the snow and the echoes of laughter throughout the grounds enhance the joy of winter fun.

All-Inclusive Ride Pass

With an all-inclusive pass covering multiple winter activities, you can efficiently enjoy sledding and other experiences. If you plan to try many activities within a set time, using this pass is a good choice.

Trout Dishes & Food

At the festival’s food court, you can enjoy a variety of trout dishes such as trout sashimi, grilled trout, and spicy fish stew. There’s also an option to have the trout you personally caught prepared on-site, satisfying both the thrill of the catch and your appetite at once.

Visiting Tip 1

The ice fishing area only operates when the ice thickness meets safety standards, so it’s best to check beforehand, especially around the opening period or when temperatures fluctuate.

Visiting Tip 2

Families with children or those who feel the cold easily will have a more relaxed experience if they plan mainly around tent fishing or the indoor fishing area.

Visiting Tip 3

The food zone offers various menu options centered on trout dishes, so allow enough time to enjoy the unique experience of eating trout you caught yourself on-site.

Operation of ice fishing may change depending on ice conditions and the weather.
If you’re sensitive to the cold, consider planning your schedule mainly around tent and indoor fishing.
Take advantage of the option to have the trout you catch cooked on the spot.

Visit (Planned) Impressions

There’s still a little time before the Pyeongchang Trout Festival (January 9 – February 9, 2026) begins, so I’m planning to visit soon. As we wait for winter to settle in in earnest, I find myself imagining the scenery of small ice holes appearing one by one on a pure white snowfield, and I’m filled with anticipation. Even if my fingers go numb in the cold air, a warm cup of coffee and the aroma of freshly grilled trout are sure to feel all the more comforting.

From what I’ve found recently, the festival takes place at Odaecheon Pyeongchang Trout Festival Grounds in Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and it runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tent fishing reservations must be made online at least two days in advance, with a daily limit on participants, so popular time slots can fill up quickly. Trout is a cold-water fish that grows in clean water, so people say both the sashimi and grilled trout are excellent, with the flavor deepening in the crisp winter air.

Personally, I’m especially looking forward to the leisurely pace of winter activities and the sound of people’s laughter. When I imagine the sound of sled wheels gliding over snow, the tap of fishing rods on the ice, and the steam rising from hot soup in the tent all mingling together, my heart feels warmer already. There are many accommodations around the festival site, but weekends tend to book up quickly, so it’s best to secure a place to stay in advance. I’m already tucking this festival into my heart as a soon‑to‑be memory of a beautiful winter day.
