The city’s art spaces, the largest Baekje temple site, and the riverside ecological wetlands connect seamlessly to fill your day in a meaningful way.
In particular, Mireuksaji, founded during the reign of King Mu of Baekje, now preserves or has restored the west stone pagoda (National Treasure No. 11), the main hall site, and flagpole supports, among others. The broad open site and well-maintained walking paths make it ideal for a leisurely stroll. Combining indoor exhibits at the National Iksan Museum with the outdoor heritage site gives you a deeper appreciation of the historical value and landscape of Mireuksaji, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
Program Information
At Iksan Art Center, a key facility along the Culture and Arts Street in the old downtown, you’ll find trick art exhibits themed around “Confession” and various photo zones. It’s a great place to walk through indoor exhibits and capture memorable photos against stylish murals and installations.
In the History & Culture and Architecture galleries at the National Iksan Museum, around 30,000 items are on display, including Mireuksaji excavation artifacts, reliquaries, replicas of gold reliquary inscriptions, and roof tiles and earthenware. By following the everyday life of the temple and the changing architecture through the ages, you can trace a long stretch of time from Baekje to Joseon all in one place.
At the outdoor heritage site where the west pagoda of Mireuksaji, the main hall site, and flagpole supports remain, you can walk at a leisurely pace while imagining the layout of an ancient temple. Thanks to the wide-open grounds and well-maintained paths, it’s also great for slowly exploring with a guided tour.
The Children’s Museum inside the National Iksan Museum is a space for family visitors and operates by reservation. It is designed so that children can naturally learn about Mireuksaji and Baekje culture through play and hands-on activities.
Yong-an Ecological Wetland Park, covering about 670,000㎡ in the Yong-an district of the Geumgang River, has well-maintained wooden deck trails, making it perfect for both walking and cycling trips. Following themed areas such as Cheonggaeguri Square, Beetle Square, Dragonfly Square, and Butterfly Square, you can experience the wetland ecosystem up close.
In summer, Yong-an Ecological Wetland Park is filled with lotus blossoms; in autumn, with cosmos and silver grass; and in winter, it becomes a resting place for migratory birds, offering different scenery each season. Nearby is the country’s largest demonstration silver grass complex, where the Geumgang Silver Grass Festival is held in autumn; simply walking between the reeds and silver grass is deeply healing.
The outdoor heritage area with the Mireuksaji stone pagoda and main hall site is open 24 hours, so it can also serve as a location for shooting sunrises or night views with the night sky. For safety, be sure to watch your step and follow the paths when visiting.
The National Iksan Museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with last admission at 5:30 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, Lunar New Year’s Day, Chuseok, and January 1, so confirming this when you plan your visit will help you arrange your schedule.
The National Iksan Museum parking lot is free and located near the entrance. The museum, Mireuksaji heritage site, and nearby walking trails are all connected, so you can park once and take your time exploring on foot.

Trip Impressions
Here are my thoughts after a one-day trip to Iksan in Jeollabuk-do. It was a day where I could enjoy Baekje cultural heritage, unique experiences, and relaxing downtime in good balance. From the moment I entered central Iksan, the city felt quiet yet full of substance. The low traditional roofs and scattered historical sites throughout the city gave me the sense that “time flows gently here.” It wasn’t overly crowded, so just walking around was enough to ease my mind a little.
The Baekje Wanggung-ri Historic Site and the Mireuksaji area are popular with tourists, yet still have enough breathing space that the scenery and atmosphere are not spoiled. In contrast, hands-on attractions like the prison set and jewelry theme park were livelier, offering a nice change of pace. In terms of the size of the attractions and how they connect, it made for a very suitable one-day course. From Iksan Station, I visited Mireuksaji, the Wanggung-ri site, the prison set, and the Jewelry Museum in that order, taking about 6–7 hours including lunch, travel, and activities. As a designated World Heritage area, the Mireuksaji and Iksan heritage sites are well-curated with plenty to see and good explanations, while the prison set—used as a filming location for movies and dramas—has many quirky features such as prisoner uniform experiences and solitary cell tours, making it especially fun if you go with friends.
The jewelry theme park and Jewelry Museum are great for families who want to combine hands-on experiences with nature play, and they have well-equipped rest areas and cafés. Parking conditions at the main heritage sites and sets were relatively good, and access from Iksan Station by bus or taxi posed no major difficulties. Overall satisfaction was high enough that I’d like to visit again. It felt like a course that suits history enthusiasts, family trips, and couples alike. Popular experience spots can have waiting times, so advance reservations or planning your visit times will make things more relaxed. I was quietly left with the desire to stay overnight next time to enjoy the night views and festival atmosphere as well.

Getting There
Public transport — From Iksan Station, take city bus no. 41 or 41-1 toward Geumma-myeon Mireuksaji. Alternatively, you can take a bus bound for Geumma to the town center and then a taxi for about 5 minutes.
By car — Exit at Iksan IC on the Honam Expressway and drive straight about 5 km following the signs toward Geumma, then turn right to reach Mireuksaji. On site, there are free parking lots, including the National Iksan Museum parking lot, so traveling by car is quite convenient.
