A Day Walking Along the Five-Senses Trail in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do
Introduction
The morning air in Iksan was calmer and clearer than I expected. In this city where the tension of industrial sites coexists with thousand-year heritage, I set out to follow a course that awakens all five senses over the span of a day, hoping to slowly feel Iksan’s own pace and breath.

Iksan is a city where you can enjoy everything from smart safety experiences and thousand-year heritage to local cuisine, nature walks, and unique cultural activities. The course starts at the Iksan Safety Experience Center, which recreates real industrial sites, then leads you to the warm, familiar atmosphere of Jungang Market, and on to Mireuksaji, where you can come face to face with the breath of Baekje, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
At Agape Garden and Guryong Village Bamboo Grove, you can walk among well-tended trees and dense bamboo, giving your mind a rest. At the Iksan Prison Set, you can enjoy a unique cultural experience in spaces that served as backdrops for numerous films and dramas. Finally, the Gothic architecture and serene atmosphere of Nabawee Cathedral offer the perfect setting to quietly wrap up your day in Iksan.
Program Information
At the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency’s Iksan Safety Experience Education Center, you can vividly experience various risk factors that may occur in daily life and industrial sites using VR and smart technologies. It’s a great program to learn about the importance of safety in an engaging way with children.
Walk along the forest paths of Agape Garden, where 1,416 trees from 17 species, including dawn redwoods, Japanese black pines, and fullmoon maples, are beautifully maintained. Once a garden for a senior welfare facility, this space has been reborn as a citizens’ rest area, offering a lush garden atmosphere year-round.
At Iksan Jungang Market, which opened in 1947, browse clothing, agricultural and marine products, medicinal herbs, rice cakes, side dishes, and butcher shops, and get a close look at the lives of Iksan residents. This section is fun for choosing among a variety of traditional foods and snacks inside the market.
Stand before the Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda, the largest and oldest stone pagoda in Korea, and the flagpole supports of Mireuksaji, and feel the majesty of a grand Baekje temple complex. By understanding the layout of the temple and the twin pagoda structure in the east and west, you can slowly trace the passage of this thousand-year heritage.
Take a leisurely healing walk through the roughly 50,000㎡ bamboo grove created in Guryong Village on the slopes of Mt. Mireuk. The grove is densely filled with bamboo, including giant bamboo, black bamboo, and variegated bamboo, making it a great place to empty your mind as you listen to the sound of the bamboo swaying in the wind.
Stroll around Korea’s only prison-themed filming set, created on the grounds of a former school, recalling scenes from movies and TV dramas. Numerous productions, including “Holiday,” “IRIS,” “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” and “Inside Men,” were filmed here, and it’s fun to hunt for photo spots.
Visit Nabawee Cathedral, built to commemorate the landing of Father Kim Dae-geon, and take your time looking around the Gothic-style church building completed in 1907. As you walk around the cathedral, you can spend the final moments of your trip quietly amid the scenery that harmonizes with the tranquil riverside.
The total course distance is about 44.3 km, so it takes a fair amount of travel time. It’s best to leave enough time between each section and plan a 2-day, 1-night itinerary.
The Mireuksaji National Relics Exhibition Hall is closed on Mondays, January 1, and on the days of Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok, so check operating days before your visit and adjust your route if needed.
The Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda and flagpole supports are outdoors and open at all times, so prepare comfortable shoes, outerwear, and an umbrella to cope with changes in weather and temperature for a more comfortable visit.
If you plan around the exhibition hall’s closing days (Mondays and major holidays), your route will flow more smoothly.
Outdoor areas such as the bamboo grove and gardens can feel very different depending on the season and weather.
Travel Impressions
I took a trip in Iksan that truly captured “from safety to history.” I felt a bit nervous starting out at the Iksan Safety Experience Center, but in reality it was a program I would trust with kids, and the atmosphere was relaxed. I enjoyed the moments in Jungang Market, where I felt the warmth of tradition and everyday life while chatting with people, and Mireuksaji impressed me far more deeply than expected with its scale and serenity. In nature spaces like the bamboo grove and gardens, it was a good time to walk slowly and clear my head.
A 2-day, 1-night schedule felt just right, and although the total distance was around 40–50 km with some travel involved, the route itself wasn’t overly demanding. The attractions—safety experiences, historical sites (Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda and flagpole supports), cultural filming sets (Iksan Prison Set), and natural gardens (Agape Garden)—were evenly mixed, leaving no room for boredom. For meals, there were plenty of traditional foods and snacks in Jungang Market, and dinner at a lamb specialty restaurant added to the travel mood. With places to rest like gardens, the cathedral, and the prison set café, it was easy to pace myself, and visiting heritage sites such as Mireuksaji in the morning or late afternoon was less crowded and made taking photos much easier.
I definitely intend to visit Iksan again. I’d especially recommend this course to families and couples who want to explore history, safety, and nature together. If anything was lacking, it was that the explanations at the Iksan Safety Experience Education Center could have been a bit more detailed, and the fact that travel times between attractions took longer than expected, so you should build in more leeway to your daily schedule. Overall, it was a trip that will stay with me for a long time, the kind of place where you can comfortably say to anyone, “Let’s come back together next time.”
