Daegu, a city rich in history, beauty, and flavor, has embraced eras ranging from the Three Kingdoms period through Joseon to modern times. From ancient tomb clusters of the Three Kingdoms, to the Joseon-era Gyeongsang Gamyeong, to Modern Alley where post-war daily life remains, there’s so much to see that even 3 days and 2 nights may feel too short.
By day, walk through historical sites and modern cultural heritage such as Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park. At night, face the softly glowing city lights from Apsan Observatory and other night-view spots scattered around downtown. End your evenings amid the fragrant grilled aromas and cozy alley vibe of Anjirang Gopchang Alley and Pyeonghwa Market Chicken Gizzard Alley, and you’ll have a trip that captures Daegu’s history, style, and flavors all at once.
Program Information
This park was created on the site of the Gyeongsang provincial government complex, which was established in Daegu in the 34th year of King Seonjo’s reign as the political, administrative, and cultural center of Gyeongsang-do. With some of the original government buildings like Seonhwadang and Jingcheonggak still standing, you can get a feel for a Joseon-era office complex, while the approximately 300-year-old pagoda tree adds a timeworn charm to the scenery.
Daegu’s Modern Alley is a hands-on walking course that follows alleyways where the everyday life of the period before and after the Korean War is relatively well preserved. Each spot is historically important, yet the scenery is infused with the warmth of parents’ and grandparents’ generations, leaving a quiet impression.
Kim Kwang-seok Street, located near Bangcheon Market in Daebong-dong, is a mural street themed around the life and music of the late singer Kim Kwang-seok. Over 350 meters of wall space are lined with sculptures, lyrics, and various murals, making it perfect for recalling his music as you stroll.
Dalseong Wetlands, where the Nakdong River meets the Geumho River, is an ecological treasure trove where you can see diverse seasonal vegetation and migratory birds. From Apsan Observatory, you can take in a sweeping view of Daegu city, enjoying a vista where city and nature blend together.
Anjirang Gopchang Alley and Pyeonghwa Market Chicken Gizzard Alley are representative food alleys brimming with a down-to-earth, lively atmosphere. You can enjoy marinated grilled offal and crispy chicken gizzard dishes at reasonable prices, making them ideal evening stops on your trip.
Daegyeonsa Temple, known as the place where Monk Iryeon conceived the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), and Dodong Seowon, which enshrines Kim Gwoeng-pil, a great Confucian scholar of the East, invite you to reflect on Korea’s philosophical and scholarly traditions amid tranquil mountain slopes. Dodong Seowon is one of the few important academies that survived the government decree abolishing seowon.
Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park is flat and has no step at the main entrance, making it relatively easy to navigate with wheelchairs and strollers. It pairs well with nearby sites such as the Modern History Museum, Hyangchon Cultural Center, and Yangnyeongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine for a leisurely 2–3 hour visit.
The Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park area is very accessible by public transport, so using the subway and buses is convenient. Parking is limited, so if you plan to drive, it’s best to check nearby public parking lots in advance.
Because the route is mostly flat, it’s relatively comfortable for travelers using strollers or wheelchairs.
Trip Impressions
Traveling Daegu with the keywords “history, style, and flavors” in mind, my first thought was how remarkably diverse the city is. Old alleys and modern cultural heritage breathe in every corner, and on streets where people walk and chat, there’s an air that feels both familiar and new. Walking along Dongseong-ro, you see modern-era buildings and today’s youth overlapping in a single frame, while in quiet places like Otgol Village, Inheung Village, and Hanbam Village, time seems to flow slowly and serenely. The overall atmosphere of the city feels unhurried yet subtly energetic.
Because there’s such a wide range of sights and experiences, we were able to make the most of the trip by planning our route well. Otgol Village, with its 400-year-old traditional houses, stone walls, and protective forest, was a great place to feel both hanok and nature as we walked. Streets that preserve traces of modern and contemporary history, such as the alleys around Dongseong-ro, Daegu Prison History Museum, and the 2·28 Memorial Central Park, helped settle our minds. Among the eateries, local spots like Daegu Jeontong Ddaro-gukbap left a strong impression, and the pleasantly chewy texture of Andong Dwitgogi was better than expected. To enjoy all these places at a relaxed pace, about 3 days and 2 nights felt just right, dividing one day around “history and alleys” and another around “nature and food.”
Getting around was easy because Daegu’s subway and city buses connect the main areas well, though parking was a bit more of a hassle near popular restaurants than at tourist attractions. I’d happily go back; it felt like a city that especially suits couples or friends who want to walk and eat at a leisurely pace. If expectations are set too high, you might feel a bit disappointed by the condition of some older facilities or shops, and popular alleys or restaurants are much more comfortable if you avoid peak hours. It was a trip that left me wanting to return in a different season to experience another side of Daegu’s scenery and atmosphere.

Getting There
Public Transport — Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park is about a 3-minute walk from Exit 4 of Jungangno Station on Subway Line 1, making it extremely accessible. Numerous main, branch, and express bus routes pass by, including 204, 304, 349, 401, 410, 503, 623, 706, 730, and 980, connecting it to major areas throughout Daegu.
By Car — Parking inside the park is limited, so it’s best to use nearby public parking lots. Because downtown roads can be congested during rush hours, we recommend using public transportation whenever possible.
When driving, avoid peak congestion times and check the locations of public parking lots in advance for a smoother visit.
Conclusion
This trip centered on Daegu’s Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park is a course that lets you experience old alleys, modern cultural heritage, and Daegu’s unique local cuisine all at once. By day, you follow the grain of history as you walk calmly through the government complex, Modern Alley, and natural spaces; by night, you encounter the city’s warm glow and nightscape at Apsan Observatory and the food alleys.
After spending about 3 days and 2 nights walking, looking, and tasting, Daegu naturally leaves the impression of a “city that is calm yet vibrant.” If you slow your pace just a little to feel the alleys, people, light, and scents, you may find yourself longing to return to Daegu again in another season.
