Overview

In the port city of Mokpo, where there’s plenty to see both day and night, you can experience a wide range of scenery at once, from the marine cable car and Gohado Observatory to the Dancing Ocean Fountain. Walking beside Mokpo’s wide-open sea and gentle waves naturally slows the pace of everyday life.

This course focuses on Mokpo’s autumn sea, weaving together views of the Dadohae archipelago, the night scenery combining Pyeonghwa Plaza and Mokpo Bridge, modern historical spaces like Mokpo Modern History Museum, and gourmet spots such as Haegwan1897 and Seonchang Raw Fish Restaurant. It’s especially suitable for those planning a relaxed 2-day, 1-night trip with manageable walking, plenty of photo opportunities, and time to rest.

Program Information

Stroll Around Yeonhee’s Super & Seosan-dong Poem Alley

On the afternoon of Day 1, walk along Yeonhee’s Super, known as a film location, and Seosan-dong Poem Alley to soak up the charm of the backstreets. Murals, old signboards, and small stairways come together to create perfect backdrops for retro-style photos.

Mokpo Bridge & Dancing Ocean Fountain Night View

As the sun goes down, watch the sky turn red and the harbor lights come on around Mokpo Bridge. Then move to Pyeonghwa Plaza to enjoy the world’s largest ocean fountain show and feel the romance of Mokpo’s night sea.

Yudalsan Monorail & Viewpoint

On the morning of Day 2, head up to Yudalsan’s summit or take the monorail to gaze down at Mokpo city and the Dadohae at a glance. The crisp autumn air makes it an ideal time to enjoy the panorama where city and sea meet.

Gohado Observatory & Overwater Deck Trail

In the afternoon, move to Gohado Island to appreciate Dadohae views from the observatory and take a leisurely walk along the approximately 1,080 m overwater deck trail. With an inclined elevator and plenty of photo spots, the walk is not too strenuous and great for pictures.

Mokpo Modern History & Culture Tour

Visit Mokpo Modern History Museum Buildings 1 and 2 and Gatbawi Culture Town to explore the modern history of this port city. Exhibitions housed in the former Japanese Consulate and the old Oriental Development Company building reveal traces of the Japanese colonial era and what the city looked like back then.

Mokpo Nine Delicacies Food Tour

Sample marinated gizzard shad sashimi at Seonchang Raw Fish Restaurant, braised monkfish at Pomi Agujjim Pyeonghwa Plaza Branch—one of the Mokpo Nine Delicacies—and visit Mokpo Gastronomy Culture Gallery Haegwan1897. Add sashimi set menus, octopus dishes, and coffee overlooking the sea, and the memories of your trip will be all the richer.

Travel Tip

The Dancing Ocean Fountain operates twice a day from Tuesday to Sunday in autumn (September–November), and three times a day on Fridays and Saturdays. Check the schedule in advance before you visit.

Travel Tip

The Gohado overwater deck trail is about 1,080 m long and relatively gentle, and with the observatory’s inclined elevator and various photo zones, it’s a great spot to enjoy both walking and photography.

Travel Tip

The Gatbawi overwater footbridge has well-maintained paths and beautiful night lighting and views, making it ideal for an evening stroll and night photography.

Plan your visit to Pyeonghwa Plaza to coincide with the fountain show times.
Thanks to elevators and photo zones, the Gohado deck trail is easy to enjoy for visitors of all ages.
The Gatbawi overwater footbridge is best enjoyed on an evening walk when the lights are on.

Travel Impressions

I’d like to share my experience of a relaxed 2-day, 1-night trip enjoying the autumn sea in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do. The sound of the waves wasn’t loud, but the cool breeze and quiet atmosphere made me feel noticeably more at ease. A calmness that’s hard to find in the city remained scattered all around, and the deepening evening glow stayed with me much longer than I expected. It wasn’t very crowded, so walks and photo stops felt comfortable, and this trip gave me many moments where I could simply stop and catch my breath.

To briefly outline my route, on the first day I focused on Mokpo Old Lighthouse Coastal Road and the Mokpo Marine Cable Car. Along the Old Lighthouse Road, I drove on a road that runs close to the sea, and arriving around sunset, the colors of the sky and sea were especially striking. I boarded the cable car at the Hadang-dong North Port station; checking the round-trip time and fare in advance helped me plan the schedule. I booked a hotel close to the sea, so I was able to enjoy both the first day’s sunset and the calm atmosphere of the next morning. Standing by the window, with the smell of the sea breeze, it felt as if the day naturally came to a close.

For meals, I mainly chose local dishes like sashimi set menus and octopus “tangtangi” near Pyeonghwa Plaza, and stopped at cafés along the way to take short breaks while looking out at the sea. Taking check-in and check-out times into account, I moved around flexibly for about 12–16 hours over the two days, and the schedule never felt rushed. If the weather cooperates, adding one or two more walking trails would be a nice idea. If I travel to Mokpo again, I’d happily follow a course with a similar mood. I especially recommend this trip to couples or friends who want to walk leisurely by the sea, and it’s also a good destination for solo travelers looking to clear their minds. Just note that if you’re using public transportation, bus routes from downtown to the coastal road or cable car stations are not very frequent, and parking near sunset can get a bit hectic. Overall, though, it was a healing trip where I could rest deeply with the quiet sea always by my side.
