Busan’s signature beaches, including Haeundae and Gwangalli, are filled with such fiery passion that they attract millions of visitors every year. At night, especially, the colorful lights of Gwangan Bridge blend with the various lights lining the shore, creating a thrilling atmosphere completely different from the daytime. The cool breeze blowing in from the sea once the heat has eased, the sound of waves, and the laughter heard here and there all come together to complete Busan’s unique night-sea scenery.
The wide white sands and gentle waves of Haeundae Beach, the vibrant festivals and busking performances along the Gwangalli Beach Theme Street, and the city nightscape seen from Dalmaji Hill and the Dongbaek Park coastal trail can all be enjoyed in one trip—that’s a big part of the charm. As you walk barefoot on the sand and take short breaks at beach cafés and pojangmacha food stalls, you naturally find yourself immersed in the nighttime stories told jointly by the sea and the city.
Program Information
Alongside Haeundae, Gwangalli Beach is one of Busan’s most famous beaches, known for its fine sand and year-round festivals that keep the atmosphere lively no matter when you visit. As you walk along the wide stretch of beach with the illuminated Gwangan Bridge behind you, you can lose track of time while enjoying the night sea.
Dongbaek Park, which turns Dongbaekseom at the southern end of Haeundae Beach into a park, is notable for its dense camellia and pine forests and its coastal walking trail. It’s a great place to circle the small island connected to the mainland and take in sweeping views of both the sea and the city.
Haeundae Beach, Busan’s most iconic beach, boasts a 1.5 km stretch of sand and a beautiful coastline. With its shallow depth and gentle waves, it’s ideal for swimming by day, and by night it’s perfect for a slow stroll while taking in the sea scenery interwoven with city lights.
Often called the Montmartre of Busan, Dalmaji Hill offers a superb landscape where the blue sea, white sands, and camellia and pine forests come together. The night view over the Haeundae area from atop the hill is considered one of the Eight Scenic Views of Busan, and it’s a great place to enjoy the blend of the night sea and city lights.
To fully savor the night sea, try arriving about 30 minutes before sunset so you can watch the moment when the sunset gives way to the night view. In seasons with larger temperature swings, bringing a windbreaker-type jacket will help you stay longer and more comfortably on the beach.
If you want to capture both Gwangan Bridge and the Haeundae skyline in one shot, it’s best to step a little back from the beach and shoot at an angle. A tripod or smartphone stand will help reduce shake and leave you with clearer night shots.
Prepare a tripod or stand when shooting beach nightscapes.
It can be windy at hillside viewpoints, so bring an outer layer.
Travel Impressions
The first impression was more relaxed than I expected. The Yeosu night sea had a mood where the city lights and the sea slightly overlapped—lively but not noisy—and I remember people sitting on benches with a “just here for a short break” look, holding a can of beer or food from a pojangmacha stall. As the night deepened, a cool breeze began to blow, and it felt as if my mind was opening up. The sight of Dolsan Bridge and the cable car line twinkling with lights was consoling in itself.
The best time window for a Yeosu night-sea trip was roughly between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. A relaxed loop around Dolsan Bridge, Dolsan Park, and Yi Sun-sin Square, with a simple meal at a seafood stall or the Romantic Pocha area and a cable car ride in between, made for an itinerary without much strain. In particular, a sea-view accommodation was very satisfying in terms of both accessibility and scenery, and the view of Dolsan Bridge, Geobukseon Bridge, and the lights of the marine cable car all in one frame from the room felt like a big gift. Having your own car makes getting around easier, but in the city center the main spots are relatively close by bus or taxi, so combining walking with public transport also worked well.
Overall satisfaction was high enough that I wanted to visit again, though there were a few minor disappointments with noise and parking. It’s great for family trips too, but I did think that a schedule that runs late into the night might be a bit much for those who tire easily. Next time, I’d like to start leisurely from the daytime, visit a café in front of the sea and some small galleries, and then extend the course into the night sea after sunset. The moments when the smell of the sea and the city lights slowly seeped in have stayed with me for a long time.

Getting There
Public transportation — The Haeundae and Gwangalli areas are easily accessible by Busan Metro and city buses. Haeundae Beach is within walking distance from Haeundae Station and Jung-dong Station, and Gwangalli Beach can also be reached by bus or on foot from stations such as Gwangan and Geumnyeonsan.
By car — You can access the area via city roads and coastal roads, and there are both public and private parking lots around Haeundae and Gwangalli. In summer peak season and on weekend evenings, parking lots can be crowded, so consider using a slightly more distant parking lot and walking as part of your stroll, or combining driving with public transportation.
The beaches are within walking distance from subway stations, so bring comfortable shoes.
