A Toy-Like World of Ice in Winter: Trip Report to the Pocheon Baegun Valley Dongjangkun Festival

Introduction

When the days grow short and the air turns noticeably cooler, it feels as though General Winter himself is on his way to freeze even the valley streams solid at Baegun Valley in Pocheon. Where water once flowed, layers of ice pile up like toys, and snow-made slides invite children and adults alike into a winter playground now being prepared. Soon the sound of sleds cutting through the cold air, and bright laughter ringing across the valley, will fill this place—and with that day in mind, this travelogue begins.

Overview

Located about an hour from Seoul, the Pocheon Baegun Valley Dongjangkun Festival is scheduled to run for 65 days from December 20, 2025 to February 22, 2026 in and around the Baegun Valley National Tourist Site in Pocheon. With snow sledding, ice sledding, six types of children’s rides, ice fishing on the frozen surface and indoor fishing, and even a giant ice tree photo zone, most of the programs are run on land, making it a relatively safe winter festival for the whole family.

You can take in Baegun Valley’s unique snowy landscape along with the festival, and around 20 types of foods you cook yourself are offered at reasonable prices, making it easy to spend a full day here. If you’d like to capture a winter moment where white snow and ice form the backdrop, and the cold valley air, warm food aromas, and people’s laughter all blend together, this is a place worth remembering.

Program Information

Snow Sledding & Ice Sledding

The valley sledding hill and rotating sled ride are signature festival experiences that children and adults can enjoy together. As you slide down the slope cutting through the white snow, you can feel the unique thrill of winter with your whole body.

Ice Fishing & Indoor Fishing

Try ice fishing by drilling a hole in the frozen surface and waiting, or enjoy indoor fishing in a warmer space. The very act of waiting on the white ice for a trout to bite becomes a memorable scene in your winter trip.

Six Types of Children’s Rides

There is a wide variety of children’s rides including a Viking ship, zipline, Euro bungee, air bounce, and flying saucer. Rides enjoyed in nature, surrounded by valley and mountains, make the memories all the more special.

Igloo Experience & Mini Zoo

Explore the inside of a snow-built igloo and meet adorable animals up close at the mini zoo. For children, it becomes like a winter nature classroom.

Traditional Top-Spinning & Winter Games

There is also a space where you can try traditional winter games such as spinning tops. As different generations spin tops together and walk over crunchy snow, adults relive memories while children discover new joys and laughter.

Ice Tree Photo Zone

A giant ice tree formed by the valley water and winter winds is set up as a photo zone. Take photos among the shimmering pillars of ice to keep a fairytale-like winter scene just as it is.

Food Stalls & Outdoor Dining

Food stalls offer some 20 different dishes including barbecue, Korean meals, snack food, and grilled trout and smelt at affordable prices. Even in the cold valley wind, the aroma of hot soups and grilled dishes will chase away both hunger and chill.

Visiting Tip ① Budget & Tickets

In addition to the 1,000 won admission, snow sledding, rides, and fishing each have separate fees, so it’s convenient to have both cash and cards ready. Tickets for admission and programs are generally sold on-site; keep in mind that refunds may be difficult.

Visiting Tip ② Best Time of Day

The festival typically operates around 09:00–17:00, and there may be occasional closure days, so it’s recommended to check the schedule on the official website or by phone before visiting. Mornings tend to be less crowded, making it easier to enjoy popular programs without rushing.

Visiting Tip ③ Taking Photos

There are plenty of photogenic spots such as the ice tree, photo zones, and wish trees, so make sure your camera or phone battery is well charged. If you visit before the crowds arrive or later in the afternoon, you can capture more tranquil photos.

Since program fees vary, it’s helpful for families to decide on a daily spending budget in advance.
Because the festival ends relatively early in the day, arriving late in the afternoon may leave you short on time for experiences.
The ice tree and photo zones are easier to shoot in the relatively quiet morning hours.

Pre-Visit Impressions

Today is December 9, 2025. The scheduled period for the Pocheon Baegun Valley Dongjangkun Festival is from December 20, 2025 to February 22, 2026, so we are now just before the festival begins. I write this with the sense of anticipation that comes with preparing for an upcoming event. The Pocheon Baegun Valley Dongjangkun Festival feels like a winter promise that is both near and yet somehow far away. There are no traces of snowflakes at the festival grounds just yet, but the crisp valley air and sharp winter chill heighten the excitement with every step I take. I imagine the sound of ice sleds gliding over the cold waters of Baegun Valley, and the flapping movements in the trout fishing area echoing in my ears.

According to recent records, the 20th Dongjangkun Festival was packed with attractions such as sledding hills, ice fishing, children’s rides, igloo experiences, traditional games, ice sculptures, and food stalls, which makes me look forward to similar offerings this time as well. Admission was relatively affordable, and with each activity priced differently, it seems wise to jot down and organize a budget beforehand to keep your mind at ease. Although your fingertips may sting in the cold, thinking of the festival lights, the smell of warm food, and bursts of laughter here and there already warms the heart. I quietly look forward to the day when I take my first step onto the ice amid a flurry of snowflakes, follow the sweet aroma of hotteok and roasted sweet potatoes, and capture in my mind’s camera the overlapping sounds of children’s laughter and sleds rushing by.

Getting There

Public Transportation — One option is to travel to the Pocheon Intercity Bus Terminal and then take the shuttle bus that runs during the festival. Alternatively, take bus 138-5 or 11, get off at Nogok 2-ri or Ildong Elementary School / Ildong Library, then transfer to bus 3 and get off at “Baegun Valley Tourist Site Front.”

By Car — From downtown Pocheon, follow Hoguk-ro, Sinyeongil-ro, or Geumgang-ro for about 40 minutes to reach the Baegun Valley area. Setting your navigation to “Baegun Valley National Tourist Site, Pocheon” makes it easier, and in winter it’s safer to check for icy roads and chain requirements in advance.

Around the festival closing time, demand for taxis and buses may increase, so it’s wise to allow extra time for your return trip.
If you’re driving, aim to arrive a bit early to account for possible icy roads near the valley and full parking lots.

Conclusion

The Pocheon Baegun Valley Dongjangkun Festival is a winter event where you can experience snow-covered valley scenery and a snow-and-ice playground all in one place, just about an hour from Seoul. As you follow the programs lined up along the valley—from snow and ice sledding, ice fishing, and children’s rides to the igloo experience and ice tree photo zone—the season’s chill gradually transforms into winter’s own brand of excitement.

As we await the opening of the festival, it’s easy to imagine the overlapping scenes of cold valley air, warm food aromas, and children’s laughter. This winter, consider stepping away from everyday life and into Baegun Valley’s icy world, and make a day of memories where even the sting in your fingers becomes something nostalgic.
