Popular restaurants in downtown Gunsan can have long waits at lunch and dinner peak times, so it’s better to move with a generous time buffer.
Gunsan is a port city widely known for its specialty eateries. Bokseongru’s seafood jjambbong and the 70-year-old Jungdong hotteok shop’s hotteok are must-try signature items; their nutty yet clean flavors are well worth the wait in line. With a bite of hotteok filled with sweet syrup and a spoonful of spicy jjambbong broth, you also taste the accumulated air of time in every alley.
Add to that the red bean buns and vegetable buns from Leesungdang, the oldest bakery in Korea, and you complete the delicious puzzle of a Gunsan trip. This course, where modern cultural heritage streets blend with old eateries, lets you feel both the history and the warmth of everyday life in Gunsan through a rhythm of walking, eating, and resting.
Program Information
At the Time Travel Festival, held against the backdrop of Gunsan’s modern alleys, you can enjoy relay parades, dance challenges, generation-themed experience booths, mission games, and more. It’s a well-rounded program for families of different generations to participate together.
At the Jjambbong Festival, you can sample dishes from five famous jjambbong restaurants in Gunsan, as well as representative jjambbong styles from countries like Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam—all in one place. Some menu items are offered at reasonable prices, making it easy to compare different styles of jjambbong.
The “Bread! Bread! Flea Market” is a bread festival where Gunsan’s famous bakeries gather in one place. You can taste a variety of breads and buy your favorites at affordable prices, making it especially appealing for travelers who love bread.
Leesungdang’s red bean buns often sell out early in the morning, so if you visit right at opening time, you’ll have a much wider selection.
Jirinseng’s chili jjajang (spicy black bean noodles) shop is closed every Tuesday, so it’s best to double-check their hours and opening days before you visit.
Parking near the main Leesungdang branch is very limited, so it’s more comfortable to park at a nearby public parking lot and walk.
For popular chili jjajang places, check their closed days and break times in advance and adjust your route accordingly.
When visiting busy downtown areas, plan around public parking and walking as your basic mode of travel.
Trip Impressions
What comes to mind first after returning from a Gunsan signature food trip is the warmth of its old alleys and modern buildings. The cool air typical of a seaside city seeped through the streets, but the warm lights and scents from the restaurants in Susong-dong, Jungdong, and Okgu-eup wrapped me in comfort the more I walked. Watching locals chat as they stood in line outside popular spots, I could naturally sense why these places have been loved for so long.
I tasted the food mainly focusing on the signature dishes. Jungdong hotteok was crispy on the outside and chewy inside—perfect as a street snack to eat while walking. Bokseongru’s seafood jjambbong had noodles and broth that went together beautifully, making for a satisfying, hearty meal. At a specialty grilled yellow croaker restaurant, the crispy fish and neatly prepared side dishes made the table feel even more abundant, while at the famed chili jjajang place, the sharp, spicy flavor lingered in my mouth. The smoky aroma and sweet marinade of the pork bulgogi we had for dinner were also enough to wipe away the day’s fatigue.
For the route, starting the morning with light bean sprout soup or hangover soup, then having Chinese food or seafood at midday, squeezing in street snacks and hotteok in between, and finishing with charcoal-grilled meat or grilled intestines in the evening felt like a well-balanced flow. The trip was enjoyable enough in two days and one night, but I also felt that two nights and three days would be better if you want to take things slowly. Public transportation alone made getting to Susong-dong and Jungdong easy enough, and places farther out like yellow croaker grill restaurants in Okgu-eup or on the outskirts were much easier to reach by rental car or taxi.
If I visit Gunsan again, I’d like to focus more on snacking around Jungdong Street and the hotteok shop, and try a wider variety of unique spicy flavors like chili jjajang. With a travel companion, each shared bite while walking side by side through the alleys becomes even more enjoyable, but even alone, a simple itinerary centered on quiet alley strolls and snacks is more than satisfying. Next time, I’d like to give myself a bit more time and carefully seek out the small, hidden eateries in Gunsan’s alleys.

For yellow croaker grill and other fish grill restaurants on the outskirts, using a rental car or taxi makes your route far more relaxed.
