The lively atmosphere of old kimjang season, when the whole neighborhood bustled together, is coming back to Jeolla Provincial Office. On November 30, “Damgeurangkke Nanuurangkke,” held on the west side grounds of Jeolla Provincial Office, centers on a hands-on kimjang program and is filled with performances, traditional games, and various history-themed activities. It is a modern reinterpretation of the warm, communal spirit of village life, aiming to revive the scene of the “kimjang community,” where neighbors once gathered to lend a hand, season the kimchi together, and share affection.
The kimchi made during the kimjang sessions will be delivered to vulnerable groups in the local community, and participants will tangibly rediscover the meaning of community through the process of making and sharing kimchi. The traditional value of caring for one another and sharing from the heart, blended with the stone walls of Jeolla Provincial Office, will offer the region a special day that warms up the coming winter in advance.
Program Info
A large-scale kimjang event with three separate sessions, using about 500 heads of napa cabbage. Participants can take home a set amount of kimchi, and the remaining kimchi will be donated to vulnerable groups such as seniors living alone, adding deeper meaning to the act of sharing.
A hands-on program where you can make chewy injeolmi yourself using a traditional ddukme (rice cake hammer). The rhythmic pounding sound and steam rising from freshly made rice cakes make this a delightful activity for the whole family.
A corner where families can experience historical professions and traditional arts such as fortune reading, archery, pansori, and Oriental caricature painting. It’s a fun way for children to naturally learn about the lives and pastimes of people in the Joseon Dynasty.
Traditional games and performances take place throughout the venue, perfect for light enjoyment between kimjang sessions. The playful atmosphere against the historic setting of Jeolla Provincial Office makes the late autumn afternoon feel even richer.
After the kimchi donation ceremony, traditional performances and kijeopnori (acrobatic performance) will follow, heightening the festive mood. Follow the dynamic movements and lively rhythms with your applause and enjoy the final moments of the festival.
Throughout Jeolla Provincial Office, you’ll find photo zones and historic spaces that capture the atmosphere of the Joseon era. It’s a great place to take special photos with scenes of the kimjang community and the traditional buildings of Jeolla Provincial Office as your backdrop.
If you’d like to join the kimjang sessions, making a reservation in advance is the safest option. Some sessions may accept on-site registration, so it’s good to arrive a bit early on the day of the event.
The three kimjang sessions start at 13:00, 14:00, and 15:00. Plan your route by combining your preferred session time with other hands-on programs and performances to enjoy the festival efficiently.
Since the event takes place outdoors from early afternoon, bring warm outerwear, and consider packing hand sanitizer or your own sanitary gloves so you can join the kimjang and rice cake programs more comfortably.
Fit traditional performances and games between key hands-on programs when planning your route
Warm clothing is essential for extended outdoor activities
Impressions (Planned Visit)
Today is November 29, 2025. The “Damgeurangkke Nanuurangkke” festival will be held tomorrow, on November 30, for one day only. I’m writing this just as that special day is about to begin, and my heart is quietly fluttering with anticipation. “Damgeurangkke Nanuurangkke,” which will unfold tomorrow on the west side grounds of Jeolla Provincial Office, is a lifestyle culture festival centered on a kimjang experience. It is expected to bring back the old scenes of communities gathering to make kimchi and share a sense of closeness with their neighbors. For one day, rice cake making, Joseon-era job experiences, and traditional performances such as pansori and kijeopnori will come together, promising a feast for the eyes, ears, and heart.
The event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and anyone can join free of charge. While the kimjang sessions are mainly filled through advance reservations, some on-site registration is said to be possible; if I’m lucky and there’s a spot left, I might be able to dip my hands into the seasoning myself. I can already picture the crisp scent of napa cabbage cutting through the hazy autumn air, and the thudding sound of the ddukme echoing against the old stone walls of Jeolla Provincial Office. Like a scene from an old archive photo, I’m looking forward to a time tomorrow when everyone in this space becomes neighbors.
