Program Information

KOSHA Iksan Safety Experience Center

This experiential safety education center is designed so anyone can easily and engagingly learn the importance of safety in everyday life. In seven experience halls, you can vividly explore around 50 educational programs on industrial safety, electrical safety, first aid, and more using VR and smart technologies.

Agape Garden Walk

This is the 4th registered private garden in Jeollabuk-do, home to 1,416 trees of 17 species including dawn redwood, Japanese black pine, and Japanese maple, all carefully tended. The evergreen arboretum surrounding a senior welfare facility has been reborn as a community rest area, ideal for quiet walks and emotional healing.

Local Flavors at Iksan Jungang Market

Opened in 1947, this permanent market is known for its atmospheric old shops and alleys. On the first floor you’ll find clothing, hanbok, accessories, and agricultural and marine products; on the second floor are medicinal herbs, rice cakes, side dishes, meat, and eateries, allowing you to enjoy the lively atmosphere and food variety unique to traditional markets all in one place.

Mireuksaji UNESCO World Heritage Site

This is the site of a Baekje-era temple where the Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda (current height 14.24 m), a National Treasure, and flagpole supports remain. Considered the oldest and largest stone pagoda in Korea, Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda is believed to have originally been nine stories tall. Its layout with twin east–west pagodas makes this an important place for understanding Baekje architecture and Buddhist culture.

Guryong Village Bamboo Forest Trek

Located on the slopes of Mireuk Mountain in Iksan, this roughly 50,000㎡ bamboo colony is said to be the largest south of the Han River. Giant bamboo dominates, with sections of soft bamboo (striped bamboo, mottled bamboo), offering a unique forest path where the sound of rustling wind creates a special atmosphere.

Unique Cultural Experience at Iksan Prison Set

This is Korea’s only prison film set, built on the grounds of a former school. Over 200 productions have been filmed here, including the movie “Holiday,” as well as “IRIS,” “Legendary Witches,” “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” and “Inside Men.” With its realistic prison layout, many corners of the set have become photo spots, offering a distinctive experience.

Visit to Nabawee Church

This church was built to commemorate Father Kim Dae-geon’s landing at Hwangsan Ferry in the 11th year of King Heonjong of Joseon. Construction began in 1906 and was completed in 1907 as a Gothic-style building. With its tranquil surroundings, it’s a lovely place to slowly explore inside and out and reflect on the time and footsteps etched into this site.

Travel Tip

The Iksan Safety Experience Center runs programs of up to 3 hours per session, and most require advance reservation. Checking availability and time slots beforehand will help you plan your schedule.

Travel Tip

As a traditional market, Iksan Jungang Market can get crowded from midday onward. Visiting in the relatively quiet morning hours lets you look around at ease and take your time over meals.

Travel Tip

The mood for walking and photography at Agape Garden and Guryong Village Bamboo Forest changes significantly with the season and weather. Light and shade, fog, and wind strength all affect your photos, so you may want to choose your season according to the atmosphere you prefer.

Since the Safety Experience Center often operates on reservations, check availability before visiting.
At traditional markets, going early helps you avoid crowds and gives you more time to chat with vendors.
The atmosphere in the garden and bamboo forest varies by season and weather, so keep that in mind when planning photo shoots.

Travel Impressions

Walking along Iksan’s “Five-Senses Travel Course from Safety to History” turned into a more harmonious day than I had expected. At the KOSHA Iksan Safety Experience Center, I learned about risks we often overlook in daily life through hands-on content. The experiences were more immersive than I imagined, making me both tense and engaged. In spaces where screens, sound, and vibration came together, the theme of safety felt much closer and more real.

Next, the bustling Jungang Market conveyed the city’s warmth, while the grandeur of the UNESCO-listed Mireuksaji offered quiet yet deep emotion. In the Guryong Village Bamboo Forest and at Nabawee Church, I could pause and catch my breath in the peaceful scenery, and the prison set, unexpectedly, was full of fun and photo opportunities that left a strong impression. Overall, the destinations were connected without strain, and because the mood wasn’t overly commercial, I felt at ease the entire time I was walking.

The course itself is well put together. At about 44.3 km in total, a 2-day, 1-night itinerary is just right, though if time is tight you could select just the main highlights for a day trip. Starting at the Safety Experience Center and moving on to Jungang Market → Mireuksaji → Guryong Village → Prison Set → Nabawee Church made for a naturally flowing route. In terms of opening hours, the experience center and market open in the morning, and Mireuksaji and the set are ideal for daytime walks in the sun, which also makes for good photos.

As for amenities, Jungang Market has plenty of food and shops, and the garden-type sites offer shaded benches and rest areas, making it easy to pause along the way. In terms of access, driving was the most convenient, and while most attractions have parking, lots can get crowded on weekends, so starting early helps. If I were to retrace this route, I’d especially recommend it to families and travelers who love history; it also feels like the right course for bringing parents or sharing an educational trip with young children.

It’s also a good fit for couples or friends who want to leisurely connect nature, culture, and unusual spaces. One thing to note is that the safety center, gardens, and sets are spread out, so travel times can take longer than expected; giving yourself some buffer will let you enjoy the journey more leisurely. Overall, I was very satisfied, and it’s the kind of trip that makes you want to return when the seasons change, to walk the same path again under different light and air.
