Gwanghallu Garden and downtown Namwon are easy to get around on foot or by taxi, making this route suitable for public-transport travelers.
In 1444, Jeong In-ji, the governor of Jeolla-do, was walking around the pavilion Gwangtongnu when he was captivated by the scenery. He likened the place to Gwanghan Cheongheobu, the palace of the moon where the beauty Hang-a lives, and from this came the name “Gwanghallu.” Gwanghallu Garden, which embraces this pavilion along with ponds, pavilions, and a traditional pavilion-garden structure, is a representative early-Joseon garden and also the setting of the classic novel “The Tale of Chunhyang.”
The “Namwon Trip in Search of an Unchanging Love Story [Well Village]” course centers on this Gwanghallu Garden and links it with Chunhyang Theme Park and Chueo Village, creating a journey that walks together with Joseon-era love and promises and the everyday scenery of Namwon. As you follow old legends, traditional architecture, and the ever-changing fields and mountain slopes of each season, you come to feel more deeply the gentle sentiment and narrative power that the city of Namwon holds.
Program Information
Gwanghallu Garden is an early-Joseon pavilion garden composed of Gwanghallu Pavilion, Ojak Bridge, Wanwoljeong Pavilion, lotus pond and pavilions, and various other structures. Climb up the pavilion to overlook the surroundings, then walk slowly along the pond to come face-to-face with the spaces imbued with the stories of Chunhyang and Lee Mong-ryong.
Located in the Namwon Tourist Complex, Chunhyang Theme Park is a cultural and artistic space themed around Chunhyang. It consists of five sections—“Meeting,” “Vows,” “Love and Parting,” “Ordeal,” and “Festival”—allowing you to follow the flow of the Tale of Chunhyang and linger in each scene.
Chueo Village sits on the border between Bojeol-myeon and Sandong-myeon in Namwon-si, Jeonbuk, warmly embraced by Cheonhwangbong Peak of Manhaengsan Mountain. Strolling through the small communities of Yongpyeong Village and Anpyeong Village, you can enjoy the vistas of rice paddies and fields, along with the wildflowers and mountain hues that change with the seasons.
In Chueo Village, various seasonal programs such as rice planting by hand, spring greens festivals, and making flower pancakes are offered. If you stay at a village-run guesthouse and enjoy local dishes like chueotang (loach soup), boiled loach, and fried loach, your trip will feel all the warmer.
Gwanghallu Garden is best enjoyed in the early morning or at sunset, when it’s quieter and you can fully take in the pavilion, pond, and scenery of the Yocheon Stream. If you want to feel the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds arrive, aim for these times.
From cherry blossoms in March–April, lotus flowers and lush greenery in June–August, autumn foliage in October–November, to snowy winter scenes, Gwanghallu Garden changes character with each season. Deciding in advance which seasonal scenery you want to see and planning your trip around it will make the experience more satisfying.
Within Gwanghallu Garden, the areas around Ojak Bridge, Wanwoljeong Pavilion, and Yeongju Island offer many great photo spots. Wear comfortable shoes, bring your camera gear, dress for the season, and take your time capturing Namwon’s scenery from different angles.
Plan a relaxed photo route centered on Ojak Bridge, Wanwoljeong Pavilion, and Yeongju Island.
Travel Impressions
The Namwon “Well Village” trip felt like a calm walk wrapped in tradition and stories. From the moment I entered Gwanghallu Garden, I had the impression that old history and legends were breathing together there, and you could sense that atmosphere in the faces of other visitors as well. Walking across Ojak Bridge in particular, the stories carried there slowly seeped into my heart, going beyond a simple visit to a historic site.
There was plenty to see and do. Inside Gwanghallu Garden, traditional structures such as Gwanghallu Pavilion, Ojak Bridge, Wanwoljeong Pavilion, Chunhyang Hall, Chunhyang Shrine, and Wolmae’s House are well preserved, and there are craft shops and cafés where you can take a break. At Chunhyang Theme Park, the sections divided into scenes like Meeting, Vows, Love and Parting made it easy to explore with the story in mind. In Chueo Village, walking among the fields and taking part in seasonal activities (like picking spring greens or making flower pancakes) let me truly feel time flowing slowly.
Setting aside about 3–4 hours for the entire course felt appropriate, and starting leisurely in the morning made it easy to enjoy the quiet atmosphere before it got crowded. Access from Namwon Station by public transport was decent, and there was parking near Gwanghallu Garden, though during festivals and busy periods it was more comfortable to allow extra time. If asked whether I’d visit again, my answer would be “yes.” It’s an especially fitting destination for couples and families, and travelers interested in traditional culture are likely to find the experience even more rewarding.
